Overview

The FLAreaCodeLookup Pro program is for Windows desktop and laptop computer users. It displays the cities in a particular area code, or the area codes for a particular city.

User Interface

The program has the following user interface:

In this example the user has typed the area code "303" and pressed the Enter key (or clicked the Search button). Note that the area code is still selected, so the program is ready for the user to type another code (or a city and state).

If you double-click an item in one of the "Results" boxes (with the exception of the State box) and the program copies it to the "Search" box. It performs the search and displays the new results. This is a convenient way of exploring the boundaries and overlays of area code regions.

If you single-click the center of a state on a map, the program lists all area codes in that state.

If you need a smaller view and have no use for the maps, you may un-check the "Show maps" option to produce the following:

This view reduces the display requirement from 800 x 600 pixels to 640 x 480 pixels.

In this example the user has typed a city and state, then pressed the Enter key. As before, the entry remains selected.

Feature Comparison

The only difference between the unregistered and registered programs is that the unregistered one does not have maps.

Feature Unregistered Program Registered Program
Number of US cities >24,000 >24,000
Number of Canadian cities 258 258
Number of other North American cities 22 22
Non-geographic area codes yes yes
Single-entry search yes yes
City selection list yes yes
Map-click feature no yes
Time zone yes yes

The database contains more than 24,000 U.S. cities, and supports non-geographic area codes such as those for toll-free services.

The program has a single search box. It allows you to type an area code and see a list of cities in that area code, or type the first few letters of a city and see the area codes for that city. The contents of the search box are selected most of the time the program is running, so you may simply type your area code or city and state then hit the Enter key.

If you enter the first few letters of a city name, the program displays a selection list of cities from the database that begin with those letters. You may then select the appropriate choice and view the area code list for that city. In this situation the basic program merely picks the first city in the database that matches the letters.

The user interface displays three maps to give you an idea of where a particular area code is located. The program highlights the state or province that contains the area code. Note that it does not show the shape of the area code region, but instead highlights the entire state or province. However, it does give you a general idea of the region's location by showing the largest city as a small white box.

The program displays the time zone for the largest city and shows the difference between the city's local time and the Eastern time zone. The program uses the computer's system clock to determine whether or not Daylight Saving is in effect, since this affects the time difference for cities that do not observe Daylight Saving.
